Pond Hockey Ice Skating and Ice Fishing on Evergreen Lake

Just a quick update on my earlier post Evergreen Pond Hockey I was out on the lake again this weekend and the ice is in great shape.  I didn’t have a chance to play any of the pickup games that were going on since I was ice fishing with my ten year old son.

The ice is about 10 inches thick and the fishing action was pretty steady.  Between the five of us we caught about 30 fish using little pink jigs with wax worms—just off the bottom.

I couldn’t help longing for the hockey games that were going on just a few hundred feet north of our honey hole!  It looked as though the Zamboni was running pretty regularly, although no goalies showed up the 6 hours I was there.  There were several large groups of skaters with plenty of good competition going on.  Have fun out there!

By the way, I talked to a friend who fished Golden Gate in the mountains west of Golden and he and his group only caught one medium sized rainbow all day!

Niiice! I’ve only been once, and I only caught 5 or 6 fish.

Ice skating on Evergreen Lake is truly an experience anyone visiting the Denver area should consider if they’ve got a free afternoon. It’s a fantastic experience!

Joel,

What a lot of people may not know is that there are several ice rinks available at any given time on Evergreen Lake. Expert and novice skaters play at the same time but on different rinks. While we were there hockey skaters were having a pick up game on one rink while other rinks had figure skating and free skating. There was even a young family pulling their toddler around in a sled on a different rink. It’s a great environment in a perfect Colorado Mountain Setting!
